Mathias Maumont Perafan is a French-Colombian image-maker whose practice bridges documentary and fine art photography. He began his studies in social geography in Paris, developing a deep sensitivity to how people shape—and are shaped by—their environments. After completing his master’s degree, his path shifted toward visual storytelling, leading him to train in filmmaking at the École de cinéma et de télévision de Québec in Canada. He further pursued advanced studies in professional photography at CFP Lachine in Montréal.
Between 2016 and 2022, Mathias worked extensively in the Canadian film and television industry, gaining experience in various roles including lighting technician, short film director, and photographer. Alongside collaborators, he co-founded in Popayán Mochilero Films, a production company dedicated to creative and documentary filmmaking.
Today, Mathias leads MAMPO, a cultural space in Popayán, Colombia, supporting artistic practice and community engagement. Between 2022 and 2025, he also participated in multiple group exhibitions with Casa Arte (now MAMPO) during Semana Santa in Popayán.
His newest project, Resistencia, has attracted further international attention and acclaim, consolidating his position as a significant contemporary photographic voice.
Throughout his career, Mathias has refined a personal voice that blends documentary rigour with formal composition. Fascinated by the quiet poetry of everyday life, his lens is drawn to the humanity present in ordinary moments. His work is informed by the traditions of humanist photography and documentary, producing images that seek to reveal empathy, complexity, and the untold layers of individual experience.
Mathias’s work has received international recognition, including shortlistings and nominations at the Sony World Photography Awards (2024), Prix de la Photographie Paris (PX3) (2024), HeadOn Photo Festival (2020) and the Fine Art Photography Awards (2020, 2021, 2024). His projects have been exhibited globally, including in China, Venice, Canada, Australia and Colombia.
